The HTC Desire 628 has some HTC hallmarks, but its poor battery life, mediocre camera and average performance are decisive factors. If you are looking for phones in this range, we recommend the LeEco Le 2, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and Moto G4 Plus.
HTC DESIRE 628 DUAL SIM – DETAILED ANALYSIS
HTC has decided to play on the field this year. This is done by bringing cheaper devices to the market and trying to reach the proverbial sweet spot in the Indian market. The HTC Desire 628 is one of these budget devices. More and more phones such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, the LeEco Le 2 and the Moto G4 are being confronted. Like its prestigious counterpart Samsung, the HTC phone is also inferior to the declared regular budget players, but the company has proven in the past that it can take full advantage of these specifications. However, the Desire 628 is not his best work.
Construction and design
We have already seen such models from HTC, and given the similarities with almost all competitors, this model is refreshing. Nevertheless, we knew better, especially about HTC.
On the one hand, the HTC Desire 628 can be called “beautiful”, but on the other hand, it is certainly not functional. The body is made entirely of glossy plastic, and although it doesn’t have the elegant metallic sheen, the blue accented sides go well with the overall white body, and you wouldn’t really call this a design that doesn’t belong to its segment.
However, the glossy plastic makes this phone incredibly slippery. This increases even more if you sweat or usually have sweaty hands.
HTC’s Boomsound speakers are located on the front panel (top and bottom). The front camera is located on the left side of the upper speaker, while the sensor stroke is located below and in the center of the upper opening.
You need to appreciate the symmetry in the openings above and below the screen, but this makes the phone larger than necessary. To be clear, the HTC Desire 628 is neither too big nor too heavy at only 141 grams (according to our measurements), but it could have been smaller. The lower bezel is especially useless, since the phone does not have a fingerprint sensor and capacitive buttons.
However, what bothers us the most, besides the glossy back, are the thick panels on the sides of the screen. While most are trying to reduce the screen size, HTC’s thick screens also feel much smaller than the 5-inch screen in this area. The company was a pioneer and an expert in design, which makes this situation even more surprising.
Finally, you will find the 13 MP rear camera at the top left of the rear panel with a circular flash underneath. HTC has also placed the microphone next to the camera for noise cancellation, while the micro USB port and the headphone jack are located at the bottom and bottom, respectively.
All in all, we will say that the Desire 628 is well packaged and well made, but it is no longer the design that we are used to in this price segment.
As mentioned above, the Desire 628 has a 5-inch screen. However, HTC decided to use a simple 720p panel, probably to reduce costs. This results in a pixel density of 294 ppi, and if you look closely, you will notice a lack of sharpness.
But although the element of sharpness would be obvious to a very sharp eye, one cannot escape the fact that this is a weak screen. We have found that the maximum luminance is about 231 lux, which is much lower than the over 700 readings we have seen before.
In addition, the brightness decreases when viewed from certain angles. The colors remain the same, but the brightness decreases.
Speaking of colors, the Desire 628 is not the best in this department either. The blacks are not deep and the color fidelity is weak overall. You will see a bright shade of red, which is probably caused by the backlight. It is easy to recognize by filling the screen with the red color at full brightness.
All this, combined with the fact that the screen is also reflective and does not have the feeling of gorilla glass, makes the Desire 628’s screen quite mediocre.
